Should you use Zindaclin gel (clindamycin) to treat your acne?

What is Zindaclin gel?
Zindaclin gel is a prescription only topical antibiotic (clindamycin phosphate) used for the treatment of acne.

How does Zindaclin work?
Clindamycin is supposed to work on acne by attacking the acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes).

How long does Zindaclin take to work?
Most people will need to use Zindaclin for at least two months before their acne starts to improve, so it's important to be patient and keep using it every day.

Can it be used in children?
Zindaclin as any other type of topical Clindamycin is allowed for use only for adults and children aged 12 years and over. Zindaclin was not tested in pregnant or breastfeeding woman.

What are the common side effects of Zindaclin?
The most common side effects of Zindaclin and all other types of topical clindamycin, include skin itching, irritation or dryness. Zindaclin gel is not suitable for people with a history of inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and people with bowel inflammation caused by antibiotic treatment (antibiotic-associated colitis).

What is the most significant side effect associated with Zindaclin?
A few cases of Inflammation of the bowel (colitis) were associated with the Zindaclin (Topical clindamycin). if you get diarrhea either during or after using Zindaclin, particularly if it becomes severe or persistent, or contains blood or mucus, you should stop using Zindaclin and see your doctor straight away.

Why you should never use Zindaclin as a single treatment for your acne?
The acne bacteria is becoming more resistant to antibiotics. Use a topical antibiotic a sole treatment for your acne can increase the bacteria resistance to this antibiotic. The high resistance rates that have developed over the past 25 years have led to the current recommendation to avoid clindamycin and erythromycin monotherapy in the treatment of acne. Based on that data the American Academy of Dermatology advises against using any topical antibiotic in including Zindaclin as single agent for acne treatment. For best treatment one should use in combination with benzoyl peroxide or just benzoyl peroxide.
