What is Minocycline?
Minocycline (Brand names: Solodyn, Dynacin, Minocin, Myrac, Ximino) is a tetracycline-class drug used to treat inflammatory (red active) acne pimples in people 12 and older. Minocycline (Solodyn) minocycline, is not effective for acne that is not red-looking (non-inflammatory), such as blackheads and whiteheads. If you become pregnant while taking Solodyn or any as all another brand of minocycline, stop taking it and call your doctor. If you are male and your partner is trying to conceive, do not take Solodyn.

What are the most common side effects of minocycline (Solodyn)?
Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, loss of appetite; mild diarrhea; skin rash or itching; or vaginal itching or discharge.

Is minocycline allowed for use in children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Children under the age of 8 years, should not use this medicine. Minocycline can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth in children younger than 12 years old. Minocycline can pass into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in a nursing infant.

Using minocycline during pregnancy could harm the unborn baby or cause permanent tooth discoloration later in life. Minocycline can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy.

Are there allergies to Minocycline?
Allergic urticarial rashes to minocycline are not rare. You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to minocycline or other tetracycline antibiotics such as demeclocycline, tetracycline, or tigecycline.

How should I take minocycline?
1. Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking minocycline. You can take it with food or milk if the medicine upsets your stomach.
2. Don't chew or break the tablets. Solodyn tablets are meant to dissolve slowly, giving a steady dose of medication over time. If you break the tablet before you take it, you'll get too much medication at one time.
3. Take your medication at the same time every day. Take it with your morning coffee, just after dinner, or whenever is convenient, so long as you're consistent. If you take one pill in the morning one day, and then in the evening the next, it won’t work as well. You’ll have too much medication in your system at once, and not enough at other times.

May I take minocycline together with other drugs or vitamins?
Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking minocycline.

Can I suntan when I am on minocycline?
Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Minocycline can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF 30) when you are outdoors.
