Does sweat cause acne?

Sweating and acne

Sweating is great for the body, mind, spirit...you name it. However, (caveat time) when it comes to our skin, the relationship with sweat is a bit more #complicated. When left on the skin too long, sweat can encourage a buildup of bacteria, dead skin cells, and other debris that can clog pores, leading to breakouts and other skin irritation—especially for those who are already acne-prone. So it’s important to make sure sweat doesn’t overstay it’s welcome on your skin

What’s more? Sweat-induced acne can pop up places other than just the face and is quite common on the upper back, chest, and buttocks. These breakouts tend to occur more in humid and hot weather, in athletes, as well as those who wear tight clothing (hello, skinny jeans!)

So, how can you prevent sweat-induced acne while still doing your favorite sweaty activities? Here are some tips!

1. Shower immediately after you sweat

Heat and humidity create the perfect environment for bacteria to flourish. After a sweaty workout, sports practice, or stuck in traffic in a hot car with no AC, try to shower as soon as you can to remove the sweat and bacteria from your face and body. If you don’t have easy access to a shower or sink to wash off, a good option is to keep acne-friendly (oil-free) cleansing wipes nearby to help keep your skin clean until you can hop in the shower.

2. Use a medicated acne cleanser

When it comes to choosing a cleanser, most standard options available at drugstores or online are not strong enough to combat or prevent acne. Make sure you choose a body cleanser with medicated (“medical-grade”) ingredients, preferably those with properties that can unclog the pores and kill acne bacteria. The best ingredient for this purpose is salicylic acid, a BHA that gently exfoliates the skin's surface layer and unblocks pores of sebum and dead skin.

3. Do not scrub your skin

I repeat, do not scrub your skin! Set aside any harsh scrubs, loofahs, and exfoliators—including spin brushes. These can damage the protective layer of the skin and ultimately make acne worse. When you shower or wash your face, simply use clean hands to gently massage cleanser on the skin, leave it on for 2-3 minutes, and wash it off with lukewarm water. Finally, pat dry (don’t rub!) your skin dry with a clean towel and apply moisturizer.

4. Change your underwear frequently

Your underwear is in touch with your body for many hours a day. Overtime, it accumulates sweat, bacteria and is in constant friction with your skin. Therefore, it’s best to change and wash underwear—and other undergarments (including bras)—frequently to help reduce and prevent body acne and other skin irritation.

5. Clean your equipment:

Whether you’re a competitive athlete, weekend warrior, or occasional yogi, it’s super important to keep any gear or tools you’re using clean. For example, padding under football helmets is a frequent cause of acne on the forehead. Make sure any equipment you’re using can be cleaned or washed thoroughly (ex. removable pads in football helmets) and clean them regularly. Finally, refer back to point 1! If you’re involved in an activity with sweaty clothes or equipment that rub against your skin, make sure to wash your face and body ASAP afterward to help prevent breakouts.
